‘TEAMWORK: PRIDE OF THE LION’
Balwyn High School has a long and proud sporting tradition with a strong emphasis
on participation as well as achievement.
More than 1000 students represent the school in the Interschool sport competition
along with more than 150 student coaches and 50 teacher coaches.
Four Sport Captains provide student leadership in the sport program.
The school is affiliated with School Sport Victoria (SSV). At Boroondara Division
level students compete against Camberwell H.S., Canterbury G.S.C., Doncaster S.C.,
Hawthorn S.C., Kew H.S., Swinburne S.S.C., Templestowe College and Warrandyte H.S.
If successful, students compete at Region, Conference and State level.
House sport competitions are held in Swimming (Headmasters Cup), Athletics (Athletics
Cup) and Cross Country (Cross Country Cup). Both the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals
are all school events with all students and staff attending.
The competitive house system consists of four houses:
- Churchill (red)
- Edinburgh (green)
- Strathmore (blue)
- Windsor (gold)
Tutorial class and year level sport competitions are often held at lunchtimes.
The range of inter-school sports on offer as part of the SSV competition includeswimming,
athletics, cross-country cricket, baseball, softball, tennis, volleyball, golf,
lawn bowls, badminton, Australian football, netball, football (soccer), basketball,
hockey and table tennis.
Each year, as part of other competitions, students can participate in squash,surf
league, rugby, cheerleading, gymnastics, aerobics, mountain bike orienteering, equestrian,
chess, rowing, break dancing, road cycling and mountain biking.
Depending on student interest, other sports are also supported. These have included
skiing and snowboarding, canoe polo, water polo and triathlon.
Students sign up to try out for participation in these sports in the Sport Office.
Training is usually held during lunchtimes, before or after school.
All students in Years 7 and 8 participate in one lesson of Sport Education each
week as part of the curriculum learning program.
