Co-curricular Program
Balwyn High School Chess Club
The Balwyn High School chess club provides a warm, friendly environment where dozens
of members engender feelings of inclusiveness and camaraderie across all year levels.
Whether you are a casual player or a serious enthusiast, you will find players suited
to your ability and above. Each semester there are intra-club tournaments, which
allow rankings to be determined for the teams that represent our school at inter-school
competitions.
Balwyn High has been very successful in interschool tournaments in recent years.
In 2004 our ‘A’ team came 4th in the Australian Chess Federation (ACF) interschool
state finals. In 2005, the ‘A’ team won the Eastern zone regional final and came
third in the state finals.
However, the ‘A’ team’s greatest successes came in 2006 and 2007 when they won the
state finals and went on to represent Victoria in the ACF National finals. Our team
won both events and hence is the reigning national champions in the only interschool
chess event sanctioned by the governing chess body in Australia.
So come along to the club in B12 during lunchtimes and sharpen your game. New members
are always welcome. Any queries please see Mr. Curigliano in B19 or contact me on
