The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is an internationally recognised award that has a long and proud history of achievement around the world.
It began in the UK in 1956 and in Australia in 1962 and is in operation in over 100 countries worldwide.
The philosophy behind the Award is that it is:
- non-competitive
- available to all
- voluntary
- flexible
- balanced
- progressive
- achievement-focused
- fun
It fosters and encourages:
- self-discipline
- self-motivation
- self-confidence
- self-reliance
- perseverance
- respect for others
- discovering new talents
- making new friends
- achieving personal excellence
Students can enter the Award at one of three levels (dependent upon age)
- Bronze
- Silver
- Gold
The Award consists of four components upon completion of which students gain entry into the specified Award level and may move on to the next Award progression.
The four Award components are:
- Service
- Skill
- Physical recreation
- Expedition/Exploration
Students must complete the relevant number of hours for all four of the components for their Award level before they can move on to the next Award.
Students completing their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award take part in Operation Prom, which is held in December at Wilsons Promontory National Park. This is run as a means by which students (in particular Bronze level) can complete their test expedition.
