Library and eLearning Centre
The Library and eLearning Centre is central in providing a stimulating learning
environment that supports the goals and priorities of Balwyn High School. This busy
centre supports and enriches the learning and teaching program of the school and
has an essential role in engaging and developing life-long learners and information
literate students.
The traditional library forms the nucleus of a dynamic, information-rich and technology
enhanced teaching and learning centre. Defined learning zones comprise an eLearning
teaching space, a wide reading area, a research zone, a computer classroom and a
private study area. These allow students to learn individually, in small groups
or as a whole class.
A comprehensive collection of print based and digital resources support the curriculum,
co-curriculum and recreational needs of the school community.
Information Literacy
The Library and eLearning Centre is a key stakeholder in Information Literacy. Students
need to become critical thinkers and effective users of information to function
successfully in today's information and knowledge-based society. The ability to
identify, access, evaluate, organise and communicate information is relevant to
all subjects and to all levels of education. Information Literacy forms the basis
for lifelong learning.
Wide Reading Program
The Library and eLearning Centre nurtures a reading culture within the school. In
the Wide Reading Program every English class in years 7, 8 and 9 is timetabled into
the library once per fortnight. Teacher-librarians work with classes to foster and
develop an appreciation and enjoyment of literature. Reading is further promoted
through the ‘Balwyn Best Books’ reading guide and the Readers’ Cup competition.
eLearning
The Library and eLearning Centre embraces emerging technologies and their potential
as tools for 21st century teaching and learning. Support is readily available in
the Centre to assist teachers in integrating eLearning into their lessons and students
in using the various software applications available on the School system. The Library
and eLearning Centre wiki/website provides a library without walls, accessible at
anytime from anywhere.
