Background

Balwyn High School is a co-educational school of over 1880 students in Years 7 to 12. It has a dedicated, professional team of 180 teachers and support staff. Established in 1954, the school has developed a rich intellectual culture. This culture manifests itself in an outstanding record of achievement that is proof of the excellence and leadership the school has offered to Victorian education.

The relevance and strength of our tradition and culture is reflected in a heavy demand for enrolments, and a reputation that extends both interstate and overseas.

Strong and diverse programs

The school provides a comprehensive, challenging, academic curriculum and encourages a strong work ethic. Positive work habits have consistently translated into outstanding VCE results that maximise students' tertiary education options. The general curriculum is well balanced and is structured with a strong emphasis on the use of learning technologies. Special opportunities are provided in accelerated mathematics, advanced studies in music and Languages Other Than English (LOTE), and a range of enrichment programs.

Four languages other than English are offered (French, Chinese, Modern Greek and Ancient Greek), and we offer an English as a Second Language (ESL) program.

Balwyn High School has an Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) for children of high intellectual potential.

A focus on student learning and support

The school promotes the all-round personal development and self-esteem of each student. We encourage the development of courteous, articulate and thoughtful attitudes. Teachers actively assist students to develop sound study habits in the middle years (Years 7-9). A high standard of personal conduct is required and the wearing of school uniform is compulsory.

A wide range of co-curricular activities is offered including music, drama, academic enrichment, debating, cultural pursuits, camps, a house system, sport and community service. The school has a strong commitment to student leadership.

A range of student services’ staff is available to support student wellbeing. A number of student support and development programs are offered including the Student Transition Enhancement Program (STEP) for Year 7 students and the extensive Integrated Health Program.

Our physical environment

Balwyn High School is set in an attractive environment amid community playing fields and parkland. The school is located in the inner-eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Recent projects have expanded the school's facilities. These include: The Arts/Technology Centre; a library/administration complex; an indoor sports centre; a music education complex; new computer facilities; a theatre; and a science wing incorporating the school canteen.

Stage 2 of the school's building program was completed in December 2005. This project has added two computer laboratories; e-learning spaces; two food technology rooms; 12 general -purpose classrooms; staff rooms and office spaces.

Improving our facilities

Stage 2B of the school building program began in September 2005.

During 2006, Stage 2B progressively makes available one room for music technology; one general music classroom; four rooms for instrumental music teaching; one drama/dance open classroom; and the Year 9 Open Learning Centre.

The well-established tradition of parent support through the Aim High Building Fund will ensure the further development of the school's facilities.

Parent involvement

The School Council expects parents to uphold the values of the school and encourages their active engagement with the school in the education of their children. Opportunities are open for parents to support curriculum and school policy development through groups such as the Parents’ Association, Friends of Music, Friends of Sport, Friends of Theatre Arts, and the School Council and its sub-committees.

The school actively seeks involvement from the wider community to expand student opportunities and to help shape the school's future.
