Role of Chaplaincy

The Chaplaincy plays an important role within Balwyn High School Wellbeing team. The Chaplain’s pastoral care and counselling support extends beyond the student cohort, to families, staff and the wider school community.

Chaplaincy Support Group

Chaplaincy services within the school are provided in part by KorusConnect and through the volunteer work of the Chaplaincy Support Group. Representatives from local churches, staff and school parents make up a support group helps raise awareness and funds through promotion within the school community and connecting with external networks such as local churches and councils; and contributing to functions and school events. 50% of the finances needed to fund the Chaplain in the school are raised by this support group through the sale of Second-Hand Books and Second-Hand Uniform.

Second-Hand Uniform Sales

The Balwyn High School Chaplaincy Second-Hand Uniform Shop is the only authorised outlet for the sale and purchase of second-hand uniforms within the school. Managed and staffed by volunteers we open regularly throughout school terms to assist students interested in buying and selling uniforms.

Monies raised support the employment of a Chaplain for Balwyn High School as well as other approved Chaplaincy Support Group projects.

School families can bring in quality used uniform items for us to sell through the shop. Sellers receive up to 70% of the sale price and the shop retains 30%. It is a great way to recycle and with new items arriving weekly it’s a great place to shop and save.

Book Sales

The Book sales began in 1988, raising money to fund a Chaplain. From modest beginnings it evolved into a busy, computerised service to help save money and to raise money – providing a major portion of the funds necessary. Run entirely by Volunteers, we are grateful for the fine help we have had from parents, students & staff.

The Book Shop opens as a “pop-up” store to continue to support the school community. Details for opening times and arrangements of this store are made available in Term 4 each year to the school community via Compass Newsfeed.

Balwyn High School continues to recognise the work of Verna Woods, who has led this initiative since its inception and continues to support and advocate for this service.
